I was listening to Grizzly Bear this weekend and realized what the song “He Hit Me” was about and was struck by the imagery in it. I ran to Wikipedia who says the song was originally written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and sung by the girl band The Crystals. “Goffin and King wrote the song after discovering that singer Little Eva was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend. When they inquired why she tolerated such treatment, Eva replied, with complete sincerity, that her boyfriend’s actions were motivated by his love for her.”
And of course it reminded me of Antony’s song “Fistful of Love” and Devendra’s cover. So I thought I’d share with you all. The chain of abuse-as-love:
♫ Grizzly Bear – He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss)
♫ Antony & the Johnsons – Fistful of Love
♫ Devendra Banhart – Fistful of Love (Antony & the Johnsons cover)
