A Pot in Which to Piss

Ask anyone who really knows me, and they’ll tell you I’m a big American history nut. Especially 19th century American history. Ever since high school I’ve loved the events that went on during that time that formed the country as we know it. So when I heard that New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus was making a sort-of concept album about the Civil War, I’ve had high hopes for it. Well I got my hands on it, and listened to it today and work and was pretty blown away. The energy, lyrics, instruments and everything really create a powerful work of art that explores how our country has been affected by the Civil War – how things have changed, and how they haven’t. It reminds me some of Two Gallants’ sprawling epic odes to America, but with a punkier edge.

Titus Andronicus – A Pot in Which to Piss

February 9th, they’ll release the track “Four Score and Seven” on 7″, spreading across the two sides of vinyl. The Monitor is out March 9th on XL Recordings.

I knew something was up in the YACHT camp – they’ve been mentioning big things to come in 2010, and now they’ve created some sort of “super group” to go on tour this year. The name of the collaboration is YACHT & the Straight Gaze (I was going to ask about the Gay Gaze, until I got the pun). The new lineup includes Rob Kieswetter (aka Bobby Birdman), Jeff Brodsky (aka Jeffrey Jerusalem), and D. Reuben Snyder (aka Rob Walmart). That’s a lot of aliases! Anyway, check out the video above, and catch them on tour this winter all over the US (except here).

(All shows with Bobby Birdman except where noted)

Just a couple of things I thought you should be aware of this wintery Tuesday. Hate snow.

LCD Soundsystem threw this little teaser “vlog”  online yesterday, showing off the beautiful LA mansion where their new album was recorded. Isn’t James Murphy adorable? And he talks a little like John C. Reilly.

October’s Very Own leaked a new A-Trak remix of Drake’s “Money to Blow” which you oughta hear

♫ Drake – Loonies to Blow (A-Trak Remix)

Last of all, Beach House’s incredible Teen Dream hits your local record shelves, iTunes, or anywhere else you can think of buying music. I got my double LP from Sub Pop on Saturday, and it’s gorgeous.

Aeroplane were one of the biggest hits in 2009, and 2010 may prove to be an even bigger year for the Belgian duo. They’ve been working on their first full-length album, and monthly they put out a new mix of some of the best new music in electronic today. ‘SUP Magazine was able to get an interview them, where they talk about their upcoming record,  their remixes, and the Italo-disco revival. Check it out here, and listen to their December mix over at SoundCloud.

EDIT: the guys put up their latest one today, so check it out here.

‘SUP also has an interview with Ernest Green aka Washed Out, which you should also read.

The Golden Filter are up to something. They put up this teaser video just a bit ago, and their website loops the video with the date “26-04-10″

Here’s to hoping they finally are gonna release an album.

Phoenix had a pretty big year in 2009. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix landed on several top of the year lists (including mine), and their music was everywhere.

Recently they performed an acoustic set in Hamburg of highlights from the album, and past albums. They also did the following cover.

Phoenix – Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands (Bob Dylan cover)

Just got in this mix from a couple guys up in Canada who call themselves LOOT. I haven’t had the chance to listen to it yet, but judging by the tracklist, it’s a good ‘un.

Download it here.

Destination Diamonds – Diamond Nights
Vicarious Bill – Limousine (Dub Version)
Kid Sister – Right Hand Hi (Kingdom Remix)
Liquid Liquid – Flextone (DJ Twitch Edit)
Animal Collective – My Girls
Donna Summers – I Feel Love
Psychedelic Furs – Heartbeat
The Chap – Ethnic Instrument (Joakim Remix)
The Gossip – Standing In the Way Of Control (Soulwax Remix)
Basement Jaxx – Where’s Your Head At
Gonzales – Working Together (Boise Noize Dub Remix)
ZZZ – Lion (Bag Raiders Remix)
The Golden Filter – Thunderbird
Bag Raiders -Turbo Love
Holy Ghost! – I Will Come Back
GRUM – Sound Reaction
LOOT – Bull Head (Liquid Liquid vs Mike Theodore Orchestra Edit)
Justice – Stress (Auto Remix)

The reason I haven’t been able to listen to it is because our internet we were stealing is now caput (I just learned in my history of the English language class that caput means head in Latin). So posting will be…dodgy.

The one and only Daytrotter always has really good artists stopping by to perform their tunes. They’ve grown from being a small venture to grabbing some of the biggest names in indie music.

This week they got Kyle Field, aka Little Wings, to stop buy and play five songs, four of them new and a cover of a Damien Jurado song. Check out his cover of “Last Rights” below, and then go hear the other songs!
