I’m really sad to announce that the Rakes have decided to call it a day and cancelled their upcoming UK and US tours. Here’s what they had to say about the break-up:
The Rakes have always been very adamant and proud of the fact that we give 100% to every gig we’ve ever played. If we can’t give it everything then we won’t do it. That was the rule we set ourselves from day one.
After much deliberation we have come to the shared conclusion that we can’t give it 100% anymore and regret to announce that The Rakes are calling it a day. We are sorry to let down all the people who were coming to see us on the UK & US tours. Writing your own obituary is a surreal thing to do but we want to give particular thanks to our much-loved fans, all the great people we’ve worked with over the years, our management and loyal record label. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to write music together and perform around the world. Genuinely, thanks for the good times…. That was one hell of a party! But now, we really must get some sleep.
The Rakes were one of my favorite bands, after only seeing them play twice at SXSW. You can read my reviews from that here and here. They will be missed! If you wish to send the band a message you can here.

Just when I thought I couldn’t be more excited about The Rakes’ upcoming US tour in support of Klang! the other day it was announced that DFA upstarts Free Energy will be coming along for the ride.

♫ We Danced Together (SebastiAn Remix)
The Rakes are returning with their new album Klang! which was released this week in the UK and later in the spring here in the US. They are, however, heading out on some tour dates here in the US in select cities. If you have the chance I highly recommend seeing them. They are very very fun to see live! And hearing their new stuff like the first single “1989″ leads me to believe these dates will be even more fun, with catchy, tight rhythms and hyperactive dancing by lead singer Alan Donohoe. Here’s the video for “1989.”
4/02/2009 – Popscene – San Francisco
4/062009 – Bowery Ballroom – New York

So I just watched the movie The Five Obstructions. If you haven’t seen it, you really should. Director Lars von Trier makes director Jørgen Leth remake his own film Det perfekte menneske (The Perfect Human) with several different challenges (as a cartoon, in a dangerous place, etc)
Here’s the cartoon version of the film:
♫ Daft Punk-Human After All (The Juan Maclean Remix)
♫ The Rakes-All Too Human
You’re In It
That’s the Reason
The Loneliness of the Outdoor Smoker
Bitchin’ in the Kitchen
The Woes of the Working Woman
1989
Shackelton
The Light From Your Mac
Muller’s Ratchet
The Final Hill
Never Get Married
The Rakes-The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect
