Ask anyone who really knows me, and they’ll tell you I’m a big American history nut. Especially 19th century American history. Ever since high school I’ve loved the events that went on during that time that formed the country as we know it. So when I heard that New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus was making a sort-of concept album about the Civil War, I’ve had high hopes for it. Well I got my hands on it, and listened to it today and work and was pretty blown away. The energy, lyrics, instruments and everything really create a powerful work of art that explores how our country has been affected by the Civil War – how things have changed, and how they haven’t. It reminds me some of Two Gallants’ sprawling epic odes to America, but with a punkier edge.
February 9th, they’ll release the track “Four Score and Seven” on 7″, spreading across the two sides of vinyl. The Monitor is out March 9th on XL Recordings.

I knew something was up in the YACHT camp – they’ve been mentioning big things to come in 2010, and now they’ve created some sort of “super group” to go on tour this year. The name of the collaboration is YACHT & the Straight Gaze (I was going to ask about the Gay Gaze, until I got the pun). The new lineup includes Rob Kieswetter (aka Bobby Birdman), Jeff Brodsky (aka Jeffrey Jerusalem), and D. Reuben Snyder (aka Rob Walmart). That’s a lot of aliases! Anyway, check out the video above, and catch them on tour this winter all over the US (except here).

Just a couple of things I thought you should be aware of this wintery Tuesday. Hate snow.

Last of all, Beach House’s incredible Teen Dream hits your local record shelves, iTunes, or anywhere else you can think of buying music. I got my double LP from Sub Pop on Saturday, and it’s gorgeous.
Aeroplane were one of the biggest hits in 2009, and 2010 may prove to be an even bigger year for the Belgian duo. They’ve been working on their first full-length album, and monthly they put out a new mix of some of the best new music in electronic today. ‘SUP Magazine was able to get an interview them, where they talk about their upcoming record, their remixes, and the Italo-disco revival. Check it out here, and listen to their December mix over at SoundCloud.
EDIT: the guys put up their latest one today, so check it out here.
‘SUP also has an interview with Ernest Green aka Washed Out, which you should also read.
