Ask anyone who really knows me, and they’ll tell you I’m a big American history nut. Especially 19th century American history. Ever since high school I’ve loved the events that went on during that time that formed the country as we know it. So when I heard that New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus was making a sort-of concept album about the Civil War, I’ve had high hopes for it. Well I got my hands on it, and listened to it today and work and was pretty blown away. The energy, lyrics, instruments and everything really create a powerful work of art that explores how our country has been affected by the Civil War – how things have changed, and how they haven’t. It reminds me some of Two Gallants’ sprawling epic odes to America, but with a punkier edge.
February 9th, they’ll release the track “Four Score and Seven” on 7″, spreading across the two sides of vinyl. The Monitor is out March 9th on XL Recordings.
