M.I.A. has been one of my favorite artists since the release of Arular, but to be honest, I was worried about her new album /\/\ /\ Y /\. The first songs we heard from it, or that were supposed to be from the album. I wasn’t too impressed. The gratuitously violent video for “Born Free” didn’t have me changing my opnion, so I wrote the album off as a flop. Then I heard the single “XXXO” which sounds sleek and sexy, but still confrontational and wholly M.I.A.
For the single release, a few remixes were commissioned, from producer/collaborator Blaqstarr and SBTRKT. The one that had me most interested is Riton’s “re-rub.” Riton takes the track to a house-ier level of club play, from the house piano stabs to the rearrangement of M.I.A.’s lyrics, it’s a great remix.
/\/\ /\ Y /\ is out July 13 on Interscope.
When I heard the Eric from The Tough Alliance was coming out with a solo album under the name ceo I got really excited, and then I was sent the album and gave it a listen and I’m in love. I know you’re probably sick of hearing that whatever music someone is pitching is “perfect for summer” but believe me, ceo‘s upcoming album White Magic is the album for summer, as of right now at least. Check out the “prologue” video below, glance over the tracklisting and give a listen to one of my favorite tracks from the album (there’s only eight but they’re all winners).
White Magic is out on Modular June 29

When Alex Chilton died in March, his band Big Star was set to reunite and play at South by Southwest. Following his death, several bands showed tribute to his songwriting during the festival and online. The also recently-reunited Teenage Fanclub called on a few of the guys from Hot Chip to cover two Alex Chilton songs, “All of the Time” and “My Rival.” Watch their tribute below.
