The Future

This weekend I went to go see Miranda July’s new movie The Future. I’ve been a big fan of hers since I learned of and participated in her (now defunct) Learning to Love You More project. Her first movie Me You and Everyone We Know was really enjoyable. Funny, clever, and heartfelt, it had me anticipate a lot from her as a director.

The Future tells the story of a couple who, in preparing to bring home an injured cat from the shelter, quit their jobs to find purpose in their lives for the next month. He joins an environmentalist group fruitlessly slinging saplings to people door-to-door, while she begins a relationship with a stranger, which leads them to question their future as people, together and separate.

The movie is full of funny moments, some purposeful and some not so much. The parts involving the injured cat, Paw Paw, are narrated by the cat in a squeaky voice (July herself) which made a lot of the audience laugh. While I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as the first, I still thought it was a moving look at relationships and time. It’s out in limited release now, so look for it in your town.

Here’s a song featured several times in the movie, as part of July’s character’s ambitious “30 dance for 30 days” project.

Just a couple of things I thought you should be aware of this wintery Tuesday. Hate snow.

LCD Soundsystem threw this little teaser “vlog”  online yesterday, showing off the beautiful LA mansion where their new album was recorded. Isn’t James Murphy adorable? And he talks a little like John C. Reilly.

October’s Very Own leaked a new A-Trak remix of Drake’s “Money to Blow” which you oughta hear

Last of all, Beach House’s incredible Teen Dream hits your local record shelves, iTunes, or anywhere else you can think of buying music. I got my double LP from Sub Pop on Saturday, and it’s gorgeous.
